The design of your website is often called the template. Your template is one feature that helps to make your website stand out. A template does not necessarily refer to a prefabricated design available to everyone that wants to buy it. A website template can be customized for you or if you are a do it yourselfer you can download various templates and try to work with them, often for free.

You can understand the term website template best if you imagine it as a house. The exterior of your house would be comparable to your website template. It is the shell that everything else fits into.

Some people make the mistake of getting a nice web design from a professional like Kelly only to fill it with less than desirable furnishings. Consider us your website decor company too. We provide you with simple techniques to keep the content of your website looking as great as the template.

Keep Your Fonts Consistent

Kelly provides several things to keep the interior of your website looking as good as the web design. Each site comes with a CSS file or cascading style sheet. This keeps your fonts a standard selectable size and makes sure your hyperlinks are consistent. You can over ride the CSS and that is the biggest mistake most people make when they control their own content.

Did you ever notice that a professional website has one consistent hyperlink color and only a few various sizes of a consistent font? We don’t recommend using colored fonts or changing the style say from Veranda to Impact on the same page or even within your website. If you are adding text to your website by copying and pasting from Word, PDF files or parts of other websites you should always use the Paste from Word or Paste Text icons provided with your system. Alternately you can copy the text into Notepad and the copy from Notepad into your online editor. Notepad is on every Windows system and strips out all competing styles so you can paste in with confidence.

The next thing people often do is load large images to their websites. This results in slow load time, server load and some times blows the image out of the template. We install in automatic image resizing tool for you which prevents this from happening. If you are using our recommended Photo Gallery plugin from Next Generation there is an alternative way of resizing your images after they are loaded to the gallery.

You can search for and install the plugins below from the Plugins / Add New area of your WordPress admin area. Most of them need to be configured.

• All in One SEO Pack
• Google XML Sitemaps
  Akismet – API Key required
• WP-SpamFree – Great tools if you don’t want to keep a record of the spammers like Akismet does. It is fire and forget after a quick setup.
• Resize At Upload Plus – Great for resizing images so they don’t slow down your site or blow out your template.
• WordPress.com Stats – API Key required – Not the best stats program but great for a quick view.
• Custom Admin Branding – Want to see your own logo when you login? Takes a bit of work to set up properly.
• WP-DBManager – Can be a bit buggy but if you want your database emailed to you and you want it optimized regularly it is a great tool.
• My Page Order – Simply slide your pages and sub pages where you want them and save the order.
• Auto Tags – Requires some setup but I think 7 tags each is good. There is no recommended setting.
• Admin Management Xtended – If you want to save a post for later or change the date it is a great little tool.
• Page Links To – Allows you to link navigation to off site pages.
• Subscribe2 easy subscription widget – Must enable the Widget but has lots of great settings. Of course, you need a high end server or VPS if you have over 250 subscribers.
• No Comments On Pages – Easily enable or disable comments accross the board.
• MapPress – Needs API key for each site. Allows you to add one or more locations to a Google Map on your website.
• Custom Meta – Removes widget link to WordPress.org etc.
• SwfObj – Makes inserting Flash easier.TinyMCE – A good customizable tool bar. Requires some setup. Watch your screen resolution doesn’t interfere with how it displays.
• Email Users – Add Role Manager if you have several admins, authors, etc and want people to be able to send each other emails.
• WP -> Twitter – Have your posts automatically go to your Twitter page.

The next time you login to your SEM control panel the bid price may now be at 75 cents. Some of these prices run up to many dollars per click. It can break your bank in no time. The other down side is the simple act of getting a visitor to your website is no guarantee of results.
