Apple to Require “Explicit User Approval” For Contact Data Access

As previously reported, Apple received a letter from Congress questioning the company about the way it allows iOS app developers to treat users’ contact info. AllThingsD is sharing a statement it received from an Apple spokesperson: “Apps that collect or transmit a user’s contact data without their prior permission are in violation of our guidelines. We’re working to make this even better for our customers, and as we have done with location services, any app wishing to access contact data will require explicit user approval in a future software release.” According to Google’s director of Android Developer Relations, Tim Bray ( via PaidContent ), this isn’t an issue with Android developers

Google Responded To the FTC On Privacy Issues Before EPIC Sued

Yesterday we brought you news that the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) had filed a federal suit against the FTC in order to block Google’s switch to a new, unified privacy policy that would cover all their services. EPIC claimed that the new policy violated a 2011 consent order that prohibited Google from combining user data without consent. Google, however, insisted that the suit was groundless, saying that “EPIC is wrong on the facts and the law.” Late yesterday afternoon, the court agreed to expedite the case, giving the FTC until February 17th to respond to the suit, and EPIC until the 21st to file their reply to the FTC

Apple Is Worth More Than Google And Microsoft COMBINED
