Free Web Resources

There are many free resources on the web to help the new business owner get started. I will list some here. All of these are self help. It may give you a better appreciation for what web masters go through to develop your web presence. Not all that calls itself a web master is truly  a “Master of the Web.” It is important to remember that these resources change from time to time. What is true today may not be true tomorrow.

First you need a website or blog.

  1. Google Blogs. The best feature here is you can email in to update your blog. Kelly Web Sales even does custom designs for this system.
  2. Blogs are Easier to use than Google Sites. However, if you want, you can have both. Google Sites cannot be customized by webmasters at this time.
  3. There are many other free blogs and sites but stick with Google. Many smaller ones have gone out of business.

Next you need to list your blog or website.

  1. First is to get listed on Google Local.
  2. Next look for related website directories both by your category and your location. See if you can get listed for free or pay a small fee. Don’t get suckered into high fees on sites with low traffic. It can be difficult to find out how much traffic a website gets. You cannot rely on Google Page Rank. A website with a Page Rank of 4 can get a thousand visitors per month or half a million visitors per month. Best to ask to see a statistics report before buying.
  3. Post articles on Blogs that allow you to do so.
  4. Find free online classified listings.
  5. If you are just opening look for free Events calendars online and post your Grand Opening or actual event if you have sales.
  6. Open a Facebook and or Twitter account and work it. MySpace has really died off. These things will continually change.

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (SEO for short) is different than SEM which stands for Search Engine Marketing. SEM is simply paying Google and others for Adwords. SEO achieves organic (natural) search engine results for your search terms. For example, if you are a Philadelphia Plumber you do not need to be found world wide for the search term “plumber’ on Google and other search engines.

SEO is part applied science and part art form. The mechanics of SEO have been explained many places on the world wide web. Therefore, I will not be redundant. If you have tried all your own Search Engine Optimization techniques and want the job done by a professional contact us. There are many techniques we have learned over the years. However, nobody can give you a guarantee.

If you receive those email solicitations that claim “first page results guaranteed” run fast and far the other way. The only way to guarantee first page results is to pay for SEM. The trouble with SEM is the prices are in  a bid status. Let’s say you are willing to pay 50 cents for each visitor. The next time you login to your SEM control panel the bid price may now be at 75 cents. Some of these prices run up to many dollars per click. It can break your bank in no time. The other down side is the simple act of getting a visitor to your website is no guarantee of results.

Normally the results you are looking for is for your phone to ring, a form to be filled out or a product to be purchased. At Kelly Web Sales we understand what your needs are and try and help you achieve your goals.

Keep your website looking great

Web 2 Point 0 Fonts

Keep Your Fonts Consistent

Kelly provides several things to keep the interior of your website looking as good as the web design. Each site comes with a CSS file or cascading style sheet. This keeps your fonts a standard selectable size and makes sure your hyperlinks are consistent. You can over ride the CSS and that is the biggest mistake most people make when they control their own content.

Did you ever notice that a professional website has one consistent hyperlink color and only a few various sizes of a consistent font? We don’t recommend using colored fonts or changing the style say from Veranda to Impact on the same page or even within your website. If you are adding text to your website by copying and pasting from Word, PDF files or parts of other websites you should always use the Paste from Word or Paste Text icons provided with your system. Alternately you can copy the text into Notepad and the copy from Notepad into your online editor. Notepad is on every Windows system and strips out all competing styles so you can paste in with confidence.

The next thing people often do is load large images to their websites. This results in slow load time, server load and some times blows the image out of the template. We install in automatic image resizing tool for you which prevents this from happening. If you are using our recommended Photo Gallery plugin from Next Generation there is an alternative way of resizing your images after they are loaded to the gallery.

In conclusion, if you keep your fonts standard and only use your online editing tool for adjusting fonts then your site will stay looking professional. The rest is pretty much automated for you by Kelly Web Sales.
