Maryland Educational System Embraces Google Apps

Much to the disappointment of students (and perhaps teachers) everywhere, a new school year will soon start.? But Google’s celebrating something related to education this afternoon, as it’s secured the Maryland Education Enterprise Consortium as yet another Google Apps partner. Miriam Schneider wrote on the Official Google Enterprise Blog , “[W]e’re happy to announce that The Maryland Education Enterprise Consortium (MEEC) will make Google Apps for Education available to 1.4 million students in the state.? MEEC is comprised of the University System of Maryland, Maryland Higher Education Commission and Maryland Department of Education, and provides software resources and services to its 194 members across the state.” There’s more, too.? Schneider later continued, “In addition to Google Apps, this agreement also enables MEEC member institutions – for example University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) – to license Google Postini Services such as Google Message Security, for use with the existing email infrastructure to enhance Spam filtering and email security for students, faculty and staff.” So it seems that all sorts of people will soon get an introduction to a significant array of Google’s services.

Google Gives Advertisers Another "In" On YouTube

In a move that investors and marketers alike should applaud, Google’s figured out another way to make money off the site it bought for $1.65 billion three and a half years ago.? Today, Google explained that it’s come up with a tool to help small organizations advertise on YouTube. Emily Williams, a member of the Inside AdWords team, explained on the corporate blog , “[W]e’re announcing another new feature in Display Ad Builder that lets advertisers use simple templates to create InVideo overlays and companion ads on YouTube.”? (FYI: “An InVideo ad is an animated flash overlay that appears at the bottom part of a video that a user is watching.”) Williams later continued, “Now, any advertiser can use Display Ad Builder to turn their image ads into overlays and run a campaign on YouTube in minutes.? Depending on the type of campaign an advertiser wants to run, overlays can be bought on a CPC (Cost Per Click) or CPM (Cost Per Thousand Impressions) basis, and can be matched to YouTube videos based on numerous criteria (like demographics or content categories), or even on a video by video level.” This could prove to be a very popular option, considering that takeover ads on the YouTube homepage are said to be sold far in advance for hundreds of thousands of dollars.? And the move also earns points for being low risk, since it probably didn’t take much in the way of resources to execute and doesn’t cut any privacy corners. Now we just get to guess how much Google will actually make from the new feature.? One slightly relevant note: earlier this month, a Citigroup analyst estimated that YouTube will pull in about $1 billion in gross revenue this year.

Twitter Inspects Links To Prevent Spam, Abuse

Clicking on links that different people send can often be a cross-your-fingers experience, considering that there are malicious tricksters, unknowing victims, and hijacked accounts to watch out for.? So Twitter’s attempting to make the experience less dangerous by checking (and sometimes rewriting) the links found in direct messages and email notifications. Del Harvey, Director of Trust and Safety at Twitter, explained on the official corporate blog , “[W]e’re launching a new service to protect users that strikes a major blow against phishing and other deceitful attacks.? By routing all links submitted to Twitter through this new service, we can detect, intercept, and prevent the spread of bad links across all of Twitter.” Harvey later continued, “For the most part, you will not notice this feature because it works behind the scenes but you may notice links shortened to twt.tl in Direct Messages and email notifications.” This move is bound to ruffle a few users’ feathers – changing the text in private messages is a sort of bold step – but on the whole, it should prove welcome enough.? A safe environment is in just about everybody’s best interests, from regular users to marketers to Twitter itself. Let’s just hope the new feature works well and doesn’t create a false sense of security.
